Castile Soap is Cheap Shampoo

Pure castile soap is made from olive oil and caustic soda (lye). You can use either sodium hydroxide NaOH  or potassium hydroxide KOH. These are generally available at your neighborhood hardware store.

However, many DIY homemade soap makers use different kinds of vegetable oils, such as coconut oil, soy, jojoba, lavender, avocado, almond oil. Get creative!    §

Cheaper Substitutes

Saponification = sudsy shampoo

When you mix oils (fats) with caustic soda (a strong base), the process creates saponins, or sudsy soaps. Castile shampoo makes a rich soft suds, so you feel pampered after conserving those expensive shampoos by using only tiny little dollops.

A gallon of homemade castile shampoo will last you a couple of years. Here is a good site with step-by-step instructions.

There are several brands on the shelf that are reasonably priced if you don't want to go to the trouble of making it at home.

After Shampoo - Use Vinegar Rinse

Vinegar is a dilute acid. After shampooing with castile, the slightly acidic vinegar will smooth the cuticle of your hair which helps to detangle it. Use the nice apple cider vinegar; and don't worry, the smell goes away after it dries. §
