Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-94) established the excretion of carbon dioxide after its formation in metabolism, although he erroneously believed that it was formed in the lungs. He also established the existence of oxygen, the nature of oxidation processes, (in particular the way in which carbon was oxidized, in combustion, to become carbon dioxide) and the reverse process to oxidation, that of reduction of oxides (metallic oxides particularly) to their constituent elements.
